One afternoon in 1971, Rubens Paiva, a former congressman and outspoken critic of Brazil’s newly established military dictatorship, was taken from his home in Rio de Janeiro by government officials. He was told only that he had to “report” to the authorities, and then he disappeared. Walter Salles’ (“The Journey of the Young Che”) is based on the memoirs of his son Marcelo Rubens Paiva. His sweeping and richly realized political drama is closely intertwined with the perspective of Rubens’ wife Eunice (a harrowing Fernanda Torres), whose tireless search for the truth about her husband would last decades. “I’m Still Here” is a harrowing true story and a thrilling portrait of human resilience in the face of injustice. A deeply moving performance by Fernanda Montenegro, Oscar nominee for Salles’ “Central Station.” A Sony Pictures Classics release.
